The Mesdag Collection

DEN HAAG

De Mesdag Collectie [nl]

Permanent Collection
The Mesdag Collection houses a collection of works by the famous maritime painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915). As the extent of his collection had increased significantly by 1887, he built a special museum next to his house.
This museum - together with the artist's former residence and supplemented with a beautiful garden - was recently restored to the state it was in around 1900. The collection includes not only paintings from The Hague School and the Barbizon School, but also Mesdag's extensive collection of applied art, ranging from Colenbrander's Rozenburg ceramics to Chinese and Japanese bronzes.
